| The first 5 books of the Jewish Bible are the Torah. These books are Bereshit (Genesis), Shemot (Exodus), Va Yikra (Leviticus), Be Midbar (Numbers) and Devarim (Deuteronomy). Each week a portion of the Torah is read. The Torah is divided into 54 portions (Parashat). Every year the entire Torah is read. (There is also a triennial cycle that takes three years to complete.) The cycle begins in the Fall on Simchat Torah. Since the Hebrew calendar is lunar with a different number of weeks each year and the Torah portion is not read on festivals, some weeks have double portions and the portions fall on different weeks each year in both the Hebrew and Gregorian calendars.
There is a wide variety of Divrei Torah (words of torah) available on the Internet. These commentaries are written from diverse points of view, and help the reader appreciate the depth and multivalence of the Torah. Some of the major archives are given below, followed by links to each week's Parashat. |
