Dear friends, this is the first in a series of short articles about Jewish sites on the Internet. There is a great wealth of Judaic information, and perhaps even a little wisdom, on the web. I would like to share with you a few of my favorite websites.
Probably the most elegant (from a technical perspective) Jewish site on
the web is aish.com, published by Aish Ha Torah. (To get there, point your web browser to http://aish.com.) Aish is Hebrew for "fire", Ha means "the" and Torah is, well, Torah. The site is based in the Old City of Jerusalem, is very Orthodox and politically rather conservative, but is usually not too heavy handed. Aish Ha Torah was founded in 1974, by Rabbi Noah Weinberg, to draw assimilating Jews back into the fold.
There are articles on a variety of topics, including: spirituality, Jewish holidays and social issues. The site has an online dating service and allows you to sign up for free email subscriptions to daily or weekly mailings. Rosamond and I particularly enjoy Rabbi Zelig Pliskinís "Daily Lift" which is a couple of sentences that are intended to help one lead a more fulfilling and mindful life. There are commentaries on the weekly parsha, an "Ask the Rabbi" column and even dating advice.
My favorite element of the site is a real time webcam view of the Kotel
(Western Wall in Jerusalem) at
http://aish.com/wallcam/. I have it book marked,
and when I am feeling a little anxious or sad, I find it strangely
comforting. Next time you are online, check it out.
