The community makes no distinction among members by financial level of
contribution. All events of the community are open to all and most are
without charge. A donation is requested for High Holy Days but no tickets
are issued. Contributing members receive free Torah School classes and
reduced rates for life cycle events performed by the rabbi.
As this is not a wealthy community, many avail themselves of services at no charge, as no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. Mendocino County is one of the poorest counties in California, and the Jewish community is no exception to that. Many are "land rich and cash poor." They are also just beginning to become educated to the need for supporting the programs of their Jewish community. As many live alternative life styles by choice, they have rejected the institutional Judaism they grew up with. Work exchange is encouraged for those who are not financially able and level of contribution is strictly confidential, as the rabbi is unaware of who contributes financially. She cares for all equally.
