Artist's Statement

Cody, Rosamond and Paul My earliest memories are of drawing and coloring with crayons. I was a lonely child who spent hours in fantasy and creating pictures from my dream world. I remember a third grade teacher telling me that I could never be an artist. I refused to color within the lines of "coloring book" type pictures. In my teens I was sent to a vocational high school where I spent four years training to be a Commercial Artist. My first part time job as an apprentice was in a big Commercial Art Studio. My wages were 25 cents per hour. The year was 1934. All I was allowed to do was lettering. I was not thrilled with commercial art. Today the computers do the lettering. Better this way. I remember feeling like a robot.

After High School, I went on to college but due to the depression etc., I did not finish. Later I attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for two years. I eventually received my BA in Art and Education from Roosevelt University in Chicago when I was 51. After teaching for a few years I went on to get an MA degree and then certification in Art Therapy from the Gestalt Institute of Chicago.

For many years I tried to make it as an artist. Not an easy road. I exhibited in competitive shows throughout the United States as well as private galleries. During the 1950s and 60s I sold my paintings and graphics through the Art Rental and Sales Gallery of the Art Institute of Chicago. I am also represented in private collections in the United States, Europe and Israel.

Until my retirement at age 75 I worked professionally in educational and non profit organizations as an Art Teacher, Trainer, Art Therapist, Counselor and Dream Worker..

Note, As a young woman, I took up the study of Hebrew language. I became deeply inspired by the beauty of the Hebrew alphabet. Most of my graphics, woodcuts, linnocuts, etchings, are based on Jewish themes and Hebrew calligraphy.
